Lisa Of BLACKPINK Is A Hit In America

For several days now, Lisa’s single “Lalisa” has been popping up on charts all around the world as they refresh, and now the time has come for her to make her grand entrance in America.

The performer, known primarily for her work with South Korean girl group Blackpink, scores her debut appearance on the Hot 100 this week with her first-ever release without her bandmates. The singer’s “Lalisa,” a semi-self-titled hip-hop-leaning electronic number, opens on the all-encompassing ranking of the most-consumed songs in the U.S. at No. 84. That might not be the loftiest start this frame, but it’s historic nonetheless for the musician.

Lisa is now one of only a very small number of solo musicians from South Korea (she was born and raised in Thailand, but her career began in South Korea) to make it to the Hot 100 in America, and the number slims down when looking only at female artists working on their own. With her first win in the U.S., Lisa joins a club that now includes CL, Psy and both Agust D (or Suga) and J-Hope from BTS.

“Lalisa” was released as a standalone single, but fans could also stream and purchase the tune’s B-side “Money.” In South Korea, the cut was shared on a single album called, expectedly, Lalisa. That set debuted atop the Gaon albums chart, though it wasn’t eligible for similar lists in countries like America due to rules about length and availability. Instead, fans focused on the song itself, which has now become a real winner for her.

Lisa is now the second member of Blackpink to chart a hit on her own on the American Hot 100. She joins Rosé, who just a few months ago started her first solo single “On the Ground” at No. 70. Another singer in the group, Jennie, released her own tune without her bandmates titled, appropriately, “Solo,” though the track didn’t quite reach the Hot 100 when it dropped back in 2018.

“Lalisa” is one of at least seven debuts on this week’s Hot 100. Lisa joins musicians like Ed Sheeran, Lil Wayne, Kendrick Lamar and Willow in launching a new cut on the ranking this time around.
