Mayjah Payne Charts at No.14 on UK iTunes Rap Song Sales Chart with “Taxin”

You just recently charted at # (14) on (UK) iTunes Rap Song Sales Chart with your (song) “Taxin”. How does that feel?

It feels magical! My team has some good momentum going right now. I am in gratitude with how things are going.

Tell us about your background getting to where you are today?

I’m from West Los Angeles born and raised, in the studios is where I spent most of my days. I’ve literally put pain in my music with blood, sweat, and tears! I recorded my first project “Phases of Love” at USC in the dorm-rooms and got a lot of support from the campus. I got the opportunity to open for T-Pain, J Cole, Nipsey Hussle, DJ Quik and other legendary artists. The road hasn’t been easy, but I’m still pushing and running the marathon.

What is the most challenging thing you have overcome in your life?

One of the more challenging moments in my life was when my Father passed away when I was 15. He was the glue that helped hold the family together and when he made his transition, we all felt it. It made all of us turn our hustle up. After my big brother Tony Payne was shot and killed on Manchester, I learned that just surviving in Los Angeles as a black male is challenging enough.

What do you want people to take away after listening to your music?

I just want it to be “eargasmic”. I want people to think my music is ear candy. As Jay Z said on The Black Album, “First I had the streets, then I had the charts; First I had their ears, now I have their hearts..”

Any new music coming out soon?

I have a project “In A Mayjah Way” that should come out sometime in May. Keep a look out for it! It’s gonna be Mayjah!

What is your greatest achievement as a musician?

My greatest achievement is my placements thanks to Dahomey Music Enterprises on projects like “Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger” and the Showtime show “The L Word”. It’s amazing to make money off your passion and turning your hobby into a job that can pay bills.

What are 3 words that describe your music?

Timeless, “Eargasmic” , Legendary.

Describe your creative process when you write new music.

It’s all about the vibes! That’s why we call it a record because it is a record in time that records our energy and vibrations and frequencies. I want magnetic records that captivate and draw people in.

Which qualities do you think make a great musician?

Patience and diligent effort make you a great musician. The best artists always want to create something better than they created before.

What’s the best piece of advice another musician ever gave you?

Mob Jr who is the cousin of The Jacka in The Mob Figaz told me to stay independent and put in the footwork and that has been solid advice.

Anyone you’d like to thank?

I want to thank everyone who has had part of my success. Special shoutout to Mama Scat Payne and my family in Kansas City, Missouri!

Do you produce your own music? If not, who do you work with?

I do produce my own music. I have been playing piano and making beats since I was a teenager. I work with Sammy Issac, C6ixx and @TCTheCreative on the regular making instrumentals.
