Johnny Gillespie Hits No. 2 on iTunes Electronic Music Singles Chart

You just charted at No. 2 on iTunes Electronic Music Single Sales Chart with your single gravitating. How does that feel?

I’m still in shock. I’ve been holding on to this record for over a year and felt that it was time to put it out with all the momentum that we’ve been building on the charts. From charting at 21 to 11 and finally hitting the top 5 at number 2. I’m at a loss for words. I feel so much gratitude to everyone that has supported me in making this dream a reality. I couldn’t have done it without my support group. We have a tight circle that is strong. Special shout out to jin Wooh who has been a teacher and friend for many years making this record sound so epic.

What do you like most about making music?

I never really thought about this question. It’s just second nature to me. It’s a way to express my emotions when I don’t have any other outlet. Sometime words aren’t enough and the music grabs ahold of everything I’m aiming to convey. It’s very therapeutic to me and helps me come back to reality feeling accomplished when the track is done.

What inspired you to start playing and making music?

You could say my old man installed music in my mind. Whether it was him playing his harmonica to me as a child or taking me to concerts or listening to music on long drives on family trips. It was always around me and it was fun to find my own way to contribute to the world.

Describe your creative process when you write new music.

Normally I start with a riff whether that be a piano melody or guitar melody and then I sing lines that come to my mind and the rest is history. I get in the lab and start cooking up the rest of the song adding elements from all types of genres.

Who's your ideal musician to collaborate with and why?

I love the musician that can get in and out. Sometime music can be a rabbit hole that could be endless. We really need to stay focused and do what’s best for the song.

Are there any musicians who inspire you? What qualities do you admire about them?

Ronnie king inspires me all the time. He’s witty and witty with his music. He goes in the track all stealth like and comes out bringing the heat. I admire his work ethic and his know how of how to do what’s best for the track.

Describe your favorite venue for performing.

Any venue packed to the brim so we can all catch each other’s vibes and have a good time.

Which skills have you gained that help you perform effectively as a musician?

Persistence. I always knew how to start a track and finish it. Whether that was with band mates or by me. It takes persistence and self determination to get the job done.

Which qualities do you think make a great musician?

I feel like an open mind to let the creative process in is a must. Persistence and the ability to do what’s best for the track. This is my recipe for creating music. It’s the ability to channel the creativity mixed with emotions that lay dormant in your heart backed with experience that one has gone through in a story telling manner.

Is there another musician you've mentored or trained? Describe what you've done to help them.

I recently produced my first record for another artist named Andy Magruder and it was amazing to give back to another great artist. And currently my producing a reggae project for another great artist named shadoe

What's the best piece of advice another musician ever gave you?

It’s more like life advice. It’s a numbers game. If you fail once. you try and try again until you hit. once you find that perfect hit. keep hitting until you strike out and try again.

What's your process for dealing with anxiety?

As a musician that use to struggle with bipolar disorder. I realized that I needed a vice and that vice was my musical creations. I found that if I felt a certain way, I could capture it and take the power out of me and make it into something relatable so others can have something to listen to when their going through a similar situation or feeling. I capture my vibes and make them into timeless pieces of art.

Anyone you’d like to thank?

I’d like to thank This great universe in which I get to create in. My beautiful wife Cait and our little one Rickie. My friends and my family. Ronnie king for being a great mentor. Jin Wooh for bringing the hot sauce on the tracks. VIP recordings. Sony orchard. Sullen clothing. Clinton sparks. The believers and doubters they all helped me get to where I’m at.

Rapper Xpression Hits Top 20 on iTunes Rap Chart

Rapper Xpression Charts Top 20 on the Hip-hop/Rap Albums Sales Chart

We were honored to speak with rapper sensation “Xpression” today who recently hit the USA iTunes Hip-hop/Rap Albums Chart at number 20 with the his hit album “The Write Path. “ We were fortunate for the Rap star to provide us some details about himself and his success. “My name is Juan Carlos Fajardo Jr and I'm from Indio, ca born and raised. I go by the artist name ‘Xpression.’ Since a kid, I fell in love with Hip-Hop that's always been my first choice of music. Listening to my influences Tupac, DMX, Eminem and Nas and more (in that generation) at such a young age is what made me at 10 years old start rapping. I would rap my first verse amongst family and friends and people were very impressed to hear me rapping at that age. I liked the attention I was getting and it motivated me to want to write more raps and continue to explore that realm.. At age 16 is when I first stepped into a studio to record my first song, with one of my close High School friends who had also been making music since his childhood. From 16 years old until now its been a non stop grind. Writing music, building connections, staying active on all my social media platforms, building up my brand , collaborating with different influencers and some of my personal childhood favorites, investing money into my craft, having a more professional sound and all around just growing into the artist I am today.”

The hardworking and talented phenom’s success has not come easily. He shared with us some of the most recent challenges he has had overcome along the way: “It took a lot of sacrifice, a lot of time away from family and friends to keep focused on my mission. I quit several jobs because it was interfering with my dreams and goals I had. I would always invest my last dollar into my music instead of buying a pair of shoes or something else that I felt I didn't need. None of it was as important to me than my music , and still to this day I'm investing in myself. I'm always trying to catch the next trend or stay ahead of the game. I’m never satisfied to the point I wanna stop building myself. I plan to keep going and my goal is to push until I can't no more. As long as I'm on this earth I will always contribute my arts to those who cherish it. I love music its my passion, my therapy, my first love. Some of the challenges I've had to overcome along the way are my battles with my mental health. When I was 15 I was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and that's always played a crucial roll in life, especially in my high school years. A period of my life when I was homeless sleeping in the back of my friends car in another friends garage. Some nights in the park, it was rough but in the midst of all that I still stayed optimistic…I kept pursuing my music.”

“Xpression” recently hit the USA iTunes Hip-hop/Rap Albums Chart at number 20 with the his hit album “The Write Path.“

Xpression is passionate about the work he does. He specializes in songwriting and story-telling as he is consistently speaking from the heart in his music and doing charitable events in the community. His talent and work ethic put him over the top of the competition, but it is his positive attitude regarding collaborations that has also propelled his career. He explains: “I separate myself from the whole I'm better he's better thing I think people get to wrapped up in that image of trying to be the best and let their egos ruin the love for the craft. I love collaborations and group efforts on projects. I think when a group of creative people get together its a stronger force and when everyone is positive, motivated and focused the work and results will speak for itself. I let my grind and actions do the talking. and not only that I don't just focus on just rap. I incorporate so much into my over all image from music to poetry to photography, to social media to comedy to managing other artist to writing for other artist I do it all. I'm a jack of all trades. I don't just stick with one thing I try to expand on every idea. You gotta dominate every aspect in this business!”

The Hip-Hop artist is also an accomplished author and his book "The Write Path To Creative Self-Xpression” is a collaboration with his mother Psychotherapist, Angelica Guajardo. Xpression is a certified Hip-hop therapy specialist who also directs teen groups, motivating the youth and trying to inspire them to chase their dreams. The artist offers his best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life when he states: “The best piece of advice for people who desire to find success is don't wait for it to find you. You gotta get out there and make your dreams a reality. If you set the proper goals in place you can make it happen, don't live in fear or doubt. Believe in yourself and believe its possible. Stand out, make your presence known, speak up. Don't be afraid to ask for help, if you don't know the answer to something, do your research. If there's an idea you have share it. Be active on social media that's very important. Make sure you find balance cause you will crash if you exhaust yourself. Know when to take a break and know when its time to get back to work, but never quit!”

The chart topping Rap star has huge plans for what's next for his fans. He explains: “What's next for me is ‘The Write Path 2’ album. "‘The Write Path” was a major milestone for me in my Hip-hop career that now I wanna just follow it up and out do myself!

Fans can connect with Xpression @xpressionthemc on all social media platforms or on his website Xpressionthemc.com if they want to learn more.

Varges Thomas - A R&B Funk Masters Journey

Tailored to your needs, regulatory excitement, body-vibes, toe-tapping, rump-shaking, and finger popping grooves; after being on the music scene as a solo artist over the last four years, Varges Thomas is still emerging and streaming across digital and mainstream radio stations around the world. The music business is definitely not for the weak or faint of heart. It is far more than a sprint or a marathon. Passion and desire are needed for any musician who really wants to make a career in the entertainment business.

The journey has been one of a kind with many ups and downs. But through it all, the consistency, dedication, and patience has kept the R&B musician humble. With several different genre's on one EP, there were challenges with identifying and grasping the direction of his artistry. Though the versatility was there, the variety of songs on his debut EP "Destiny" resulted in mixed reviews.

Varges has been in several Indie music publications including but not limited to: Airplay Magazine, ArtistRack, Indie Network Radio, Magic Music Magazine, Radio Indie International Network, and Bring Back Soul Music along with other press and radio interviews. His songs were streamed and are still streaming in over 69 countries worldwide. The popular tunes are: Juice, Ladies Night, Varges Jam, V-Spot, Give It To Ya, Destiny, Something Special featuring PleasureMore and a tribute song to his mentor the late Roger Troutman.

His latest single "Lost For Words" is a song about finding it hard to put into words how you feel about the one you love. This track is a smooth, soft, borderline-mellow groove that is grabbing listeners' ears as the lyrical content can be related to many who may be in or once were in a serious relationship.

Here are five recommendations that all recording artist needs to know and understand. First, it takes more than talent to be successful. There has to be a team of people who believe in your craft and potential as an artist. Secondly, you have to have faith and believe in yourself to make a difference in your own life and in the lives of others.

Thirdly, there has to be networking in the industry -- with plenty of marketing and promoting your brand or products. Also, you will need finances to get your career started and headed in the right direction to get noticed. One may ask," What does it take to succeed?" You have to be willing to invest in yourself. You must be in charge of your own destiny, your sweat-equity (developing, polishing and maintaining your craft), and your commitment to your music career. There is never a dull moment as long as you are continuing to stay active and on top of your game.

Lastly, there will be some sleepless nights, along with sweat, tears, joys and growing pains. It is necessary to have thick skin and the ability to handle constructive criticism from those who can help elevate your career and take it to the next level. Let the journey continue!

VIP Recordings' Chris Callovar Hits Top 15 on the USA iTunes Top 100 Dance Chart

stevenchart13.jpg

It's an honor to speak with you today. You just recently hit the USA iTunes Top 100 Dance Songs Chart at number 13, with the your track “Keep Me Close to You (Radio Edit)” released with VIP Recordings a Florida based record label currently distributed by a division of Sony Music Entertainment. Why don't you give us some details about you and your success. How did you get to where you are today?

I just kept believing in myself and I always trusted the process. I learnt a lot from YouTube in the beginning and after completing all my courses at Berklee College Of Music last year, I knew I was ready to take my music to the next level. There were many times when I just wanted to give up but my parents, close friends and supporters said otherwise. It’s because of them that I kept pushing. Once my parents understood what I was doing and started believing in me, that was the ultimate motivation for me.

I'm sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way? *

There were certainly several challenges that I came across as such a career demands a lot of funding. At first, I had to struggle to get my parents to trust in me and convince them that this is the path I want to take. My teachers and friends (except for a few) would mock me and talk bad about me behind my back. Fortunately, I had a few close friends who truly believed in what I was doing.

Let's talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?

To be very specific, I’m an Electronic Dance Music Producer and I specialize in producing “Progressive House” which is a sub genre of House Music. Now to answer the second part of your question, first of all, I would charge much less compared to other big artists because to me, this is more about sharing the same passion for producing music rather than making it super professional and putting money before anything else. Working with me is like working with a friend. It’s about having fun with what we produce in the studio, sharing those magical moments together and being free to express our talents. No artist should feel the need to be professional with me and unnecessarily presume that he/she should have major boundaries before collaborating with me. I would do my best to make my fellow producer or singer, who would like to collaborate with me, feel comfortable around me rather than make them feel nervous or confined.

What's your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?

Go with your gut feeling. Don’t ever be afraid to fail as that is only a lesson that is meant to be learnt which ultimately, will push you further ahead. If you are passionate about something and you truly believe that this is what you’re meant to do, give it everything you have. If you’re a teenager and you’re reading this, then do what I did. Convince your parents. Show them that you were made for this. Only then will they fully believe in what you’re doing unless you’re really lucky to have parents who are willing to support you in whatever you do from the very beginning.

Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?

Success to me is not about making millions, owning a mansion with several cars. It’s about fulfilling what my heart and soul desires the most which is seeing my parents settle down in a beautiful countryside somewhere in Europe or Canada with a lovely bungalow which I paid for with my hard earned money. Seeing them live happily and in complete peace in such a positive environment would be the ultimate satisfaction and success for me.

What's next for you?

Getting on an official Spotify playlist is definitely my next goal. Along with that, obviously comes even better sounding music. “Keep Me Close To You” was just the very first professional sounding track of mine. There’s so much to come.
Finally, how can people connect with you if they want to learn more?

Everyone should feel free to connect with me on Instagram or on Facebook! I’m always there to answer your questions.

Meet Ananya, Influential Philanthropist and Recording Artist With a Global Impact on Mental Health and Financial Solutions

We were honored to interview Ananya, an influential philanthropist and recording artist who is changing perceptions on diversity in the entertainment industry and creating a global impact on mental health and financial solutions.

Ananya, you are one of the first musicians from India to break through in the West, you have hit nearly 350 million combined streams, collaborated with artists from Afrojack to Sean Kingston, and performed alongside Coldplay and Wiz Khalifa, what has your success in music meant to you personally as a musician from India?"

I have a long way to go, but I’m loving the journey. I feel so lucky to get to live my passion every single day – particularly over the last year, which has been so difficult for everyone, music has been a lifeline through the heaviness and isolation.  When I got to LA at the beginning of 2020, my management had set up all these shows and appearances- then everything shut down.  So, like everyone, we had to be so resourceful to get our work done.  I really wanted to get some music out so I made a studio in my spare room at home – hanging blankets and pillows all over the place, and did all the production over zoom. It was kind of back to basics, which really allowed me to connect with the tracks. I’m so glad people out here connected with the music once it was out. It’s  still crazy to me that I went from doing little open mic nights around London to getting play outs on US radio and getting to working with the amazing people I have, whether its Wiz, Sean Kingston or Afrojack, I feel totally, immeasurably grateful - not to mention vindicated. When I was starting out, I had to really fight to make myself heard, there was not a lot of artists making the kind of music I wanted to make in India and it was tough to stay true to myself and what I believed in.  I am so so happy that I did – now I pride myself on being unapologetically me! It’s amazing to have the streams, but the best thing is when someone reaches out to me to tell me that they connected with something in one of my songs and it maybe helped them through something or made them feel less alone. Music always did that for me, and if I can do that for others then that is what this is all about. That is success for me.

What do you think your success in music means to musicians in or from India?

I really want to make India proud of what I am doing out here. It’s not that common for artists to venture out.  When I was starting out, there weren’t a lot of people who looked like me, making the kind of music I wanted to make and it was tough not having anyone to identify with and follow in the footsteps of. Hopefully what I am doing will encourage  other musicians back home to feel more confident about thinking internationally when they are creating. There’s so much talent there that deserves to be heard on a global stage.

As an entrepreneur, you have set up “Svatantra “, which means freedom in Hindi, when you were only 17 to provide financial solutions to underserved women in rural India. You now have over a million customers.  Do you have any favorite personal stories on the impact you have had on the financial solutions to underserved women in rural India?

Every single client we have supported is important to me. In India the divide between rich and poor is incredibly wide. I recognize myself as enormously privileged, and I feel it is my duty to give back. We are able to reach the most marginalized women in the country: women who otherwise wouldn’t have access to banks or to financial assistance. We put the infrastructure in place so that women can help themselves, and have a hand in their own future. It is an honor to do so.  Whenever I am back in India I always take a bit of time to catch up with a few clients to see if what we are doing is continuing to make a positive impact. Before the pandemic, I went to go and see one of our very first clients, a lady who offered beauty services but at the time did not have the money to grow her business. I was so inspired when I went back, in the few years since she became a client she now has a proper business which employs four other women, and she has been able to get her daughter into full time education too. It is a testament to the fact that when women are able to earn and own and determine their own futures, entire communities are uplifted.

You also have a mental health organization in India, “Mpower”, which is set up after your own struggles whilst at Oxford University. You are also an ambassador for NAMI, the largest mental health organization in the US. Through this work you are ranked one of GQs most influential Indians.  How important is mental health advocacy to you as an entrepreneur?

It's incredibly important to me that I can use whatever platform I build to do some good – otherwise what’s the point?  When I was at college in the UK I struggled a lot with anxiety and panic attacks. Between my studies, running my businesses back in India, working on my music and trying to maintain a social life, I was totally burnt out… It took me a while to come to terms with it all, but eventually, I was lucky enough to get the professional help I needed. I know from personal experience that the consequences of just ‘sweeping it under the rug’ are awful and how important professional help can be so I wanted to make sure that everyone back home was able to get access to the same support that I was.  India is in the grip of a mental health crisis, and it’s only been made worse by the awful impact COVID has had. Depression and suicide rates are on the rise, and people are too scared to reach out for help because of the stigma, lack of awareness,  – or just because there isn’t enough support. At MPower, we campaign to stamp out the stigma and  provide amazing care for people living with mental health issues who have been ignored or discriminated against. We want people to know that its ok not to be ok sometimes and that there is help available should they need it. Through the Ananya Birla Foundation, I am also working on a study on mental health and care in rural India which I hope will drive much needed change in those hard to reach places.  I’ve also recently teamed up with NAMI in the US, to support them with their amazing work around mental health here. They provide advocacy and support so people and families affected by mental health conditions can build better lives. We teamed up at the end of last year and its been amazing to help them spread their message.

Ananya,  you WERE ON THE COVER Vogue India LAST month, can you talk about changing the perceptions of Indian musicians in the US and the increasing appetite for diversity

I am proud that I get to challenge people’s idea of what an Indian musician sounds like. Most people just think of Bollywood. And don’t get me wrong – I love some of that stuff, but there is so, so much more to Indian music.  I think streaming platforms like Spotify and social media have allowed audiences to find music that they never would have come across otherwise, which is great for artists not just in India but around the world. It also means young people are getting influenced by a whole range of styles and sounds.

You have had to overcome cultural stereotypes to drop out of Oxford University and pursue music, can you comment on that process?

For a while I was definitely that super bookish student who was so focused on my grades – like many kids I felt a particular pressure to succeed. I really wanted to make that work, but  however much I tried, that path just didn’t feel like me.  I used to play little shows at sketchy bars around London every weekend, and that was what made me feel complete. There was nothing on earth that made me happier - that feeling of being on stage was so addictive, the opportunity songwriting gave me to process my emotions and channel my pain and fear into creativity was incomparable.  I dropped out in my second year. I knew what I wanted to do, and I knew if I had any chance of succeeding then I had to commit every part of myself to it. It was scary to turn my back on a traditional career path and that security, but it wouldn’t have made me happy. I have no regrets.

Lastly, you yourself are someone who has battled and has overcome mental health struggles, what was that process like and do you have any advice you can lend to other artists or fans who may be going through a similar situation? I remember feeling utterly alone, and utterly ashamed. So what I would like to say is: it’s okay not to be okay, in fact it’s normal - most of us will go through it at some stage. What’s not okay is to suffer in silence. Mental illness isn’t a sign of weakness, and asking for help can be the strongest thing you ever do.

Lani’s New Afro-Beat and Reggae Album “Zion" Releases Worldwide with Mercy Entertainment

lani zion art.jpg

Lani's afrobeat and reggae inspired EP "Zion" provides  motivation, positivity, love and strength to worldwide listeners.  The music artist's devotion to her family is the heart of this EP as it is titled after her son 'Zion.'   The creole songstress creates songs that are universal relatable across the world with beautiful themes, lyrics and melodies that will have you singing and dancing, no matter who you are or where you come from. Lani was born and raised in South East Melbourne, Australia.  Her Mother, who is from Seychelles, and Father, Sister and Brother who are from Mauritius, all lived together in a community where many Creole residents resided from overseas.  Lani’s Creole culture contributed greatly to her upbringing.  Her Father, being a musician himself, is a lead guitarist in a popular Creole band, that of which Lani has performed with many times as a child.  As a child, Lani was very shy and timid, however, when it came to performing, she would exhibit her natural talent.  She participated in a elementary dance school at 5 years old taking up ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary, hip-hop, song and dance and drama classes. She was even apart of one of the first Sega dancing group in Melbourne which allowed her to perform at many events representing Seychelles.   Lani’s love for singing came from her father. She would perform along side with him at his gigs and as a soloist. From a very young age, Lani knew performing music was a dream she would love to pursue.    Lani also has years of experience not only in front of the camera but behind the scenes. Her success in filmmaking started to develop as she discovered a talent and passion for film editing.  Upon graduating high school in 2007, she went on to formerly study filmmaking and in 2008 Lani met a young man named Jarryd through friends who she started dating and they became inseparable.

One of her biggest accomplishments throughout film school was one of her short films being nominated for "Best Actress in a film festival" in Sydney and another one of her short film ‘Silent Cry’ winning an award at "Monash Youth Film Festival."  Soon after Lani graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor Degree in Screen Production, she had many successful ventures into many different entertainment industries including film, photography, make-up artistry and Zumba dance.  Despite enjoying years of experience with successful film, photography, makeup and dance productions, Lani could not help but find herself wanting to return to the music industry.  With an abundance of natural talent, Lani felt in her heart that destiny is leading her towards success in the music business.   At 21 years old, Lani decided to go back to her old singing teacher, Tania G, from David Jaanz School of Singing.  From there, her  she developed singing techniques and started to mold her sound as an compelling artist.  In 2013, Lani and Jarryd got married at the young age of 23.  At their Wedding, Lani built up the courage and sang him a song at their reception. It was a one of the most heartfelt moments, which prompted Jarryd to became one of her biggest supports.

Lani’s particular sound is originally influenced from the artist ‘Marina’ (formally known as ‘Marina and the Diamonds’). Marina who exhibits positivity and life in her music is a great source of inspiration, and the first time Lani heard Marina on the radio, the uniqueness of her voice was "magical" and resembled her own voice. Lani started writing songs, recording in a home studio and making YouTube videos of her music and covers and began to create momentum in the music industry. One of the highlights in her career and the launch and beginning of ‘Lani’ was in 2014 when Lani released her first 4 track EP titled ‘Heat of the Night’. The EP was launched in Melbourne City with a band and backup dancers organized by herself and was an enormous success. In 2016, Lani started working with an independent record label where she recorded multiple songs and music videos. Lani was excited she was able to share her creative energy and passion for music with a team of people in comparison to working independently for a long period.

In January 2019, Lani gave birth to her first child, Zion.  According to the artist "Becoming a mum really put everything into perspective where it came to her values and music."  With Zion only being a newborn, she made a difficult decision to go back out on her own independently and essentially start from scratch. The thought of taking this step was very daunting, so she took a step back and decided to start writing again.  One day, Lani was on the play mat with Zion, a notepad and pen.  She wrote down the words, ‘My Light’ which the song started coming about.  As she was singing this song, Zion would smile and laugh and she use this as an indication that this is the special song she had to get produced.   In September in 2019, she recorded "My Light" with featured artist ‘Sazzy Alile’.

The song was released and launched in November at the Jamaican Music and Food Festival Pre Party and was accompanied by The Push Reggae Band.  At this event, Lani met leaders in the music industry including DJ Ragz, Producer Pat Barallon, Masia One and many more. The event opened opportunities for Lani as ‘My Light’ started to become popular within the international Reggae community.  In December, Lani filmed and released the music video for ‘My Light.'   The release of the music video developed relationships that sponsored radio play around the world and streaming of the music video in Africa where they have warmly welcomed her and many fans started to arise.

From the initial success of ‘My Light’, Lani started getting approached by opportunities in the music industry.  From radio interviews and gigs around Melbourne she started getting herself more known within the music industry.  In March 2020, Mercy Entertainment, a record label in USA, approached Lani.  According to Lani, she "could hardly believe within a year she went from the fear and unknowing of her music career future of starting all over again, to now being signed to a music label who believes in her talent and wants to work with her to make her dreams come true."  She signed the contract and is now working with a great team of like minded people that are helping to push her music globally.

Lani has now positioned herself in a formidable position for her creativity to thrive, building from the momentum of her earlier success.  On March 19th 2021, "Zion" EP with Mercy Entertainment in association with Push Global Entertainment's contract with The Orchard, a division of Sony Music Entertainment, dropped her 8 track EP containing songs with featured artists included King Kiuh, Yami J and DJ Wade.  This exciting, Afrobeat, Reggae/ Pop inspired EP is titled after her son ‘Zion’ who is the main inspiration for her continuing her passion of providing music to the world.  Building on many successes in the entertainment industry and with her message of optimism, positivity and hopefulness that has inspired her followers worldwide, she is grateful and excited for what the future has in store.

Spotlight Interview with Music Composer, Performer and Educator "Kerry Kennard"

kerry smiling art.jpg

Today we interview Kerry Kennard, an influential music composer, performer and educator from Ohio, USA.

It's an honor to speak with you today. Why don't you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today? *

Thanks for the opportunity to share my life, Sebastian. It all started watching a band play in Junior High, Freedom jam/Freefare. I think some people might remember them, a definite high energy rock & roll show. In high school, I was in band all three years. I played drums in a few bands and music theatre in the Ohio area.. Then I went on to a local college, Wright State University (WSU). From studying music ed. there, I transferred to Belmont University, studying contemporary music/Percussion Performance. During time at Wright State, I took a year off and traveled with American Entertainment Productions (AEP), doing HS/JH, and convention shows. We travelled across the U.S., mostly states close to Ohio. Doing some graduate work at Univ. of Dayton and Eastman school of Music, I transferred credits and did a year Master of Music in teaching at Eastern Kentucky University. I also learned about Film Music – one class – doing four short videos which are on YouTube.

After EKU, next step went towards more performance with Holland America Line cruise line, doing Percussion and some drum set. I performed for three years, equating about our to five six-month contracts. It was a great experience, playing with click tracks for some Production shows, dance sets (for guests), and other music sets around the ship.

In 2016, with continued interest in Film Music - I studied Michelle Lockey’s music licensing and sync class information online. In 2019, I graduated with a one-year Online Master’s degree in Jazz, with a 4.0 GPA, while working other jobs. Starting my own business, KennardMusic and continue to learn business/Finance skills, all these experiences and education help me become an Artist, as well as a musician. The music education supports the writing and creative side, while music listening and performance experiences has shaped my music in different ways.

I'm sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way? *

Great question, Sebastian. Fear of the unknown – there have been a few of these circumstances in my life. Some doubt / hesitation – about how to walk through some situations in this life. Depression – at different times. Growing up, I went to a counselor, and it helped a little. This person started prescribing some drugs, though I think it made it worse. I stopped taking them and stopped going to the counselor. Advice, ... work out your own issues ... if possible. I was depressed / sad for a few years after my Dad’s passing / death. It was hard ... lots of grief to deal with. Living in Nashville, TN at the time, there was a support group which helped during this period. Hearing other people’s stories helped to relate to mine, at times. The weekly and monthly meetings did help. Since going through depression and some doubt, I feel I am a stronger person now – able to take on most situations. Granted, I’m still human and am grateful to make it this far in life.

Let's talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition? *

I specialize in Drum Set now; I still play congas and other hand percussion when needed. Going back to school for Jazz, I wanted to work on my drum skills, as well as learn more about jazz music, being able to compete with some of the other players / Educators in the College marketplace. Granted, having the degree helps, finding work during these Pandemic times is trickier, and hard to know what schools are hiring for Adjunct and/or Full-time teachers. Some schools I heard are not hiring; so, creating KennardMusic seemed a way to create my own studio last year (2020). Knowing drums and percussion with Latin/World knowledge is one area where I excel. Learning these patterns during the online Jazz Program will help people who are interested learn Brazil and South America drum patterns. Being part of PASiC is a blessing. The yearly conventions are great! To the clinics to seeing new gear, PASiC is a great Convention – able to help learn about the competition. I am able to download information from the website. Receiving the monthly magazines helps to keep up with other Drum Artists and the whole percussion scene. Speaking of magazines, I read and skim DownBeat and JazzED articles – two great resources ‘zines to be part of any serious musician’s life.

What's your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life? *

I would say stick with it (persistence), no matter what instrument, or outside field you are interested in. Keep up with what’s going on in the industry you’re interested in. Within the Music industry, there are so many sub-categories to find a niche. For example, Performance there are the music genres (Rock, Pop Rock, R&B, Country, Jazz, etc.). In the music business, there are many subgroups as well, i.e. music publishing, education, composition, and learning about Performance Rights Organizations/Music Businesses, and new ones which are created with the growing digital market, like the MLC.com for example. It has come into existence from the signing of the MMA, which President Trump signed into law, being a digital collector of mechanical licenses from new works, and past works. The company’s database started with the Harry Fox database, as “Technology company ConsenSys and mechanical licensing administrator Harry Fox Agency (HFA) received unanimous approval from the MLC Board to become the primary vendors responsible for managing the matching of digital uses to musical works, distributing mechanical royalties, and onboarding songwriters, composers, lyricists, and music publishers and their catalogs to the database”. (www.theMLC.com)

Learn all you can about the field you plan on going into. Focus your energies toward those goals, which are written down (right? :~) . Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you? * For the longest time, I thought it meant having a desired amount of income. Now, I believe it is finishing a desired task. For example, finishing the last music degree is a success. Finishing a certain part of a career is considered a success. Yes, money is important, as in Webster’s dictionary, one definition of success states, ‘the gaining of wealth and fame’. Since my father died, I have struggled with what success means. Therefore, I make this point saying, ‘to attain a desired end’, as Webster defines the word succeed.

What's next for you? *

More composing and ... performing. Talking with a singer this week, I’m looking into a band doing R&B/Motown. We talked about doing Festivals, with a few possible booking agents assisting with gigs. I do have a Jazz project which needs funding to finish. It’s called Coolin’. The GoFundMe campaign link is: https://gofund.me/d02240c4. There are short music mockups inside the GFM campaign. My composing life is still growing; I like this new plug-in called GrainStates, which has a lot of interesting sounds with lots of parameters to make stimulating music. Two recent tunes are ‘Grainy Sounds’ and ‘April Mystery’, both found on SoundCloud. As my music theory teachers always said, ... develop your own music/sound. Always liked Schoenberg (12-tone system) and quartal harmonies. Seems many percussionists used these musical devices for composition –another story someday. :~)

Finally, how can people connect with you if they want to learn more?

Of course, Sebastian, they can contact me at www.kerrykennard.com, which has all the Social Media means to connect. Facebook page is www.Facebook.com/KennardMusicLLc. I do spend some time on LinkedIn also; feel free to converse with me there.

Thank you again, Sebastian for the opportunity to share some of my story with everyone. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of this great new network of acquaintances.

VIP Recordings' Capt Teno makes Sirius XM Premier on the Shade 45 Radio Show

We are honored to interview VIP Recordings distributed artist and rising star “Capt Teno” who will have his song “All Dat Ass” premiered on Sirius XM Radio on Eminem’s Shade 45 Radio Show Sunday night 5/30/21 11pm-2am with DJ Dinero!

It's an honor to speak with you today. Why don't you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?

  • I started rapping with a couple friends, I was in a rap group. We started just freestyle rapping around the neighborhood, then we had the idea to take it seriously and make a few songs to perform.(those songs were really bad) Then after that I was in a Hip-hop development program that basically puts artists threw artists development. Learning song writing, video production, and audio production I was ready to start working on building my own production support. Now I’m just mastering my craft and giving space for growth.

I'm sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way? *

  • I’ve been threw a lot of ups and downs so far. I’ve had a few labels come to me trying to sign me to bad deals. I’ve lost a lot of friendship and relationships. I’ve even gone broke (like can’t feed yourself broke) because I believed in my dream of being successful in this industry and it was worth it. A wise person told me “Skip the drip, invest in yourself!”

Let's talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition? *

  • i am a full time audio/ visual producer for my multimedia production company based in Philadelphia. I specialize in audio engineering, video production, and digital marketing. I started building my own production company because when I was looking for studios as just an artist every studio pushed me to the side because I wasn’t a big name.

What's your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life? *

  • Don’t let the lack of not having something stop you from doing what you want, it’s more then one way to skin a cat.

  • Also hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work hard.

Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you? *

  • Financial stability & economic impact

What's next for you? *

  • Next for me is a huge checklist of goals, starting a music label, I’m working on a few projects music wise, and build the empire for independent artists to come create with a amazing vibe that promotes business growth.

Finally, how can people connect with you if they want to learn more?

  • you can follow me on all streaming platforms “@teno215” I always respond. You can also search “Captn Teno” on google and find all my pages. Please tune into Shade 45 show on Sirius XM radio to check out my song “ All Dat Ass!”
