After Disoriented Concert, Smash Mouth Singer Steve Harwell Retires

211012-Steve-Harwell-2015-se-247p-ea6384.jpg

Harwell had announced earlier that he intended to take some time off from performing, but apparently he has retired altogether.

Smash Mouth’s lead singer Steve Harwell is apparently retiring after a controversial concert in upstate New York on Saturday that found him slurring his words and making vaguely threatening comments toward the audience. The singer has been battling health problems for several years and the band had played some recent shows with a stand-in vocalist.

The singer, 54, apparently made the announcement to TMZ, although there was no message on his or the band’s socials at the time of this article’s publication (Harwell’s Instagram account is private) and a rep for the group did not immediately respond to Variety’s request for comment.

Steve-Harwell-Smash-Mouth.jpg

“Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of being a Rockstar performing in front of sold-out arenas and have been so fortunate to live out that dream. To my bandmates, it’s been an honor performing with you all these years and I can’t think of anyone else I would have rather gone on this wild journey with.”

According to TMZ, Harwell was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy eight years ago, which led to other medical setbacks like heart failure and Wernicke’s encephalopathy, which impacts his motor functions, including speech and memory, and presumably contributed to his disoriented performance at the concert, which took place Saturday afternoon in Bethel, New York. Clips from the performance circulated widely online over the past few days.

Music Is About Confidence Says Lisa of BLACKPINK

1.jpg

In the music video for her new solo song “Lalisa,” Lisa Manobal of BLACKPINK sits perched on an ornate throne, adorned in gold jewelry and matching nails; the centerpiece is a traditional Thai headdress, tiered and anointed with white flowers. The throne room is her stage. The dancers, and viewers, are subjects. We look on as she ascends to the throne while alternately executing perfect, intricate choreography. “The jet black and pink crown belongs to we,” she raps, alluding to BLACKPINK. But there is no bravado in her exhibition of power — her sense of pride is not misplaced. Check the view count on “Lalisa.” Ask the shop owners in Bangkok who have seen an increase in the sales of traditional Thai outfits and jewelry since her video was released. Her skill and influence are undeniable.

“I wanted to show you who I am through my first single solo album,” Lisa says about her latest release. The title song is her full first name, Lalisa, for a reason. “It is full of my confidence. I often said to BLINKS, ‘Always be confident.’" That’s the message she wanted to deliver in her first solo outing. Fans know who is addressing them as soon as they hear the words “BLACKPINK in your area.” But if you want to make the rest of the world remember you, what better way than to make them sing your name?

lisa-blackpink-yg-entertainment-051021.jpg

The 24-year-old singer and rapper has made waves for years as the maknae of one of the highest-selling K-pop girl groups of all time, BLACKPINK. The past few years have seen the members of BLACKPINK slowly step into individual spotlights alongside their work in the group; Jennie dropped the empowered hit “Solo,” Jisoo has been working on the forthcoming K-drama “Snowdrop,” and Rosé released the down-to-earth anthem “On the Ground.” Lisa has been excited to watch her fellow members thrive, and they’re sharing their energy with her, too. “I was really happy when I saw the other members' preparing for their solo projects, but now they congratulated me so much!" Lisa says. “Jennie and Rosé did a really good job on their solo albums, so now it is my turn to take that energy and show my energy to the fullest.”

On SNL Kim Kardashian Returns to Singing After a Decade in 'Ladies Night Song'

maxresdefault (1).jpg

Kim Kardashian West showed off her singing chops for the first time in a decade on Saturday Night Live.

During her SNL hosting debut on Oct. 9, the 40-year-old reality TV star and entrepreneur appeared in a skit titled "Ladies Night Song," in which she hits the nightclub for a much-needed night out with her fellow "grown and sexy ladies."

It's the first time we've heard Kardashian West sing since her 2011 solo dance-pop single "Jam (Turn It Up)."

kim-kardashian-snl-SS-ftr.jpg

"Come on, it's going to be so much fun. We used to always do this," Kardashian West's Trish tells her skeptical friends as they wait in line to enter the club. "Come on guys, let's go in."

Dressed in a shiny colorful short dress, her character then rap-sings about being in the VIP while the music is bumping before passing out from fatigue on a nearby couch.

"Grown a-- women in the club. Boss a-- women in the club. Prolly too old for the club," Kardashian West and her friends belt out in unison. "Ain't nowhere to sit in this whole a-- club."

211010094700-kim-kardashian-snl-moments-restricted-super-tease.jpg

Kardashian West's Trish later returns, claiming that she wasn't really asleep. "I know you little girls ain't laughin' at me/ For your information, I wasn't asleep. I was resting my eyes/ Why you worried about me? But now I'm wide awake and --," she adds before suddenly falling asleep again on the shoulder of a guy at the bar.

After a frustrating evening of painful high heels and stomach issues, the girls decide to call it a night at 9:01 p.m., even though Kardashian West's Trish is re-energized after two power naps.

Kardashian West's last foray into music was 2011's "Jam (Turn It Up)," which some hoped would lead to a full album release. She showcased the single at a 2011 New Year's party at Las Vegas' TAO nightclub, and it was released commercially later that year, with proceeds reportedly going to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

In New Dear Evan Hansen Song Sza Sings About 'The Anonymous Ones'

origin.jpg

On September 24 the film adaptation of hit musical Dear Evan Hansen will finally hit theaters, and with it comes a brand-new song written specifically for the movie. That's fairly common for Hollywood treatments of Broadway shows. But what makes Dear Evan Hansen's new tune, "The Anonymous Ones," special is who co-wrote it (and who sings it in the film), as well as who sings it on the soundtrack.

For the film, star Amandla Stenberg collaborated with original music writers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul to make "The Anonymous Ones" a real moment for her character, Alana. And in keeping with that, a new version of the track from SZA feels equally big. Her take on "The Anonymous Ones" comes complete with a new video that just dropped.

sza.jpg

In the clip, helmed by superstar director Collin Tilley, SZA's daily routine illuminates the undercurrent of the song's meaning: that everyone is going through their own battles, often quietly and anonymously, and that you never quite know anyone's story. "Keep on keeping secrets that they think they have to hide," she sings. "What if everybody's secret is they have that secret side?"

It's a message that runs through both the musical and the film, which follow the fallout of the title character's big lie and its consequences. With him through that is Alana, whose own inner turmoil is what inspired her to work with Pasek and Paul on the track.

"The intention was to deepen her as a character and understand that she's actually going through her own struggles with mental illness," Stenberg said in a recent interview.

Ester Dean On Why Women and Barbies Should Be Producers

gettyimages-891290398_wide-d745938c3d7bf6f13f770c3da7de49b14bddbd43.jpg

Starting out in underground studios in Omaha, Nebraska, before relocating to Atlanta at age 20, she understands that the obstacles barring entry to the music industry, like purchasing equipment and renting studio time, can be difficult to overcome. Today, less than 2 percent of producers are women, and fewer still are women of color. That’s why Dean collaborated with Girls Make Beats to expose girls to the careers of producers, DJs, and audio engineers. The program offers one-on-one mentorship with working professionals and provides music equipment for hands-on courses, which Dean hopes will make the journey more accessible, especially for those from underprivileged backgrounds. She is working in collaboration with Mattel, who even created a music producer Barbie doll to inspire young women to pursue a career in the industry. “If you want to know what a girl sounds like, let her make beats,” Dean says. “If you want to know what the essence of a woman is, have her make music.”

1109819-ester-dean-617-409-compressed.jpg

Dean remembers it was “hearing Black women sing and just have all the swag” that inspired her to step into her creativity unapologetically. “Mary J. Blige, Kelly Price, Faith Evans, SWV with the b-boy outfits. Women in the R&B, hip-hop genres made me want to do everything they were doing.” Seeing artists that looked like her gave Dean the confidence to pursue a career in music, which underscored for her the importance of representation. She explains how she believes that the next generation can close the gender gap by exuding confidence in their work, showing up with a business-first attitude, and never seeking the validation of the boys.

kc6ehrvqbdze5z5aaz6o.10.jpg

From your time and experience, can you speak about the representation of women behind the scenes and why you believe that narrative exists?

Ester Dean: I have only been in the music industry for 10 years. I watched the secret, turned it into my manifestation, and came to California, worked like a dog. And I didn't see just males. I didn't just see females. I saw a group of people in their working lives. The first time I looked at an interview and it said that other people had written the song I wrote, I was like, how did they get that magazine to say that?

The gap is when you're working in the back, you don't come up to greet the people in the front. You know, the chefs don't come out. I've learned, if I have PR, when the song came out, I was also involved in the conversation. I do believe whether it's a woman or a man, the gap between people knowing who wrote the music and who produced the music is based on PR. It's like, you can say you did it all day on Instagram, but that ain't going to take you that far. It's going to get some likes, but it's not going to get global exposure. So I tell every producer, every songwriter, everybody I meet: Are you going to get your PR?

Madonna Is Working On A “Visual Autobiography” About Her Life

Madonna_Rebel_Heart_Tour_2015_-_Stockholm_(23051472299)_(cropped).jpg

Madonna says that previous scripts written for her are "the most hideous superficial crap" that she's ever read. She is currently working on a “visual autobiography” about her life.

david-banda-madonna-new-home-t.jpg

She discussed what projects she has coming up in the future, including a film about her life, which she referred to as a “visual autobiography”. “Don’t call it a biopic,” Madonna told host Jimmy Fallon.

“The reason I’m doing it is a bunch of people have tried to write movies about me,” she told Fallon, “but they’re always men.”

She explained that Universal had tried to make a film but failed; she said that the studio sent her a draft script, which she described as “the most hideous superficial crap I ever read”, and that they had tapped up a “total misogynist” to direct it.

“Why would these people make a movie about my life?” she continued. “There’s nothing true in the script, the guy who is making it has no understanding of women, no appreciation of women, no respect for women.”

“I just threw down the gauntlet,” Madonna added, before saying that if anyone is going to do a film about her life then it is going to be her.

Scotty McCreery on Why New Album 'Same Truck' Is 'More in the Moment' Than Past Work

After a decade in the spotlight, Scotty McCreery has learned to trust his instincts -- and the 27-year-old admits he set the bar high when writing songs for his new album, Same Truck, released Sept. 17 via Triple Tigers. McCreery credits the pandemic with giving him extra time to craft songs he felt were strong enough to follow the three consecutive chart-topping singles on Billboard's Country Airplay chart from his fourth studio album, 2018's Seasons Change.

Scotty-Mccreery-CH.jpg

“We had a lot of an album ready to go before the pandemic and, if I’m being honest, I didn’t feel I was writing my best stuff -- I didn’t think I had a ‘Five More Minutes’ or a ‘This Is It’ here,” McCreery says of the No. 1 songs from Seasons Change. (“In Between” was his third chart-topping single from the album.) “A silver lining over last year is that I had that extra time to pick up a guitar and write songs. There were a lot of Zoom writes. We had a couple songs we wrote before that made the record, but most of this would be from the last year and half.”

ScottyMcCreery2020.jpg

It’s been a decade since the Garner, NC native won the 10th season of American Idol in 2011, and saw his debut album, Clear As Day, debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Scoring three consecutive No. 1 singles with , Seasons Change, took McCreery’s career to a new level and he admits working on the follow up was a little daunting. “I don’t know if it was scary -- more so that I’m a competitor by nature,” he tells Billboard. “I always want to set the bar for the next album. I want to set it even higher for myself, so I wanted to be writing the best stuff I could be writing, songs that mean something and come from a place in my heart that I care about. I’m super proud of the message in these songs and the perspective of this record."

Bring Me The Horizon tell us about the addiction-tackling “future emo” of new single ‘DiE4u’

Bring Me The Horizon have returned with ‘DiE4u’ – the next taste of their ‘POST HUMAN’ project. Check out our new and exclusive video interview with frontman Oli Sykes above.

Having been teasing fans for some weeks, the Sheffield rock giants have today (September 16) shared the first part of the follow-up to 2020’s acclaimed ‘POST HUMAN: SURVIVAL HORROR‘ EP and mini album – with another record in the ‘POST HUMAN’ series to follow in early 2022.

073802a12e379d613e434f20c4ca0a79.jpg

Oli Sykes explained how the lyrics for ‘DiE4u’ revisited his battles with addiction.

“I’m tackling the song as if this unhealthy obsession I have is a relationship – almost like a mistress,” said Sykes. “I’ve learned over the past year while I’ve been recovering that when you’re in it, addiction is like you’re having an affair. You’re doing this thing behind everyone’s back, it’s a secret and it feels like you’re cheating and betraying people. I never saw it in that way. I just thought I was harming myself and not other people. I didn’t realise how much it can fuck up people’s trust.

He continued: “This song is triumphant for me in a way because it’s me finally accepting that I’m not someone who can drink alcohol, smoke weed or do any of these things because I just have a problem with it and it always goes down the same road. That’s not something that I’ve been able to admit to myself. This song is a defiant stamp of me saying, ‘No, I’m making a choice now. I can’t keep doing this for the rest of my life because it’s only going to end up one way’.”

GettyImages-127795025.jpg

Sykes also explained how this theme fed into more new material. “The topic of the next record is going to be about how as I’m getting older, to ask what are the life lessons that I’ve learned?” he said. “What can I give to the next generation or younger people looking up and listening to us? What is it that I can teach? What are the truths I need to learn and accept myself?

Ozuna Teases New Collab With Black Pink and Megan Thee Stallion

41e9b47c-07af-11eb-afc8-92e0da0ef1c3_image_hires_155550.jpg

Last night, at the 2021 VMAs, Puerto Rico's Ozuna turned the entire stage at Brooklyn's Barclays Center into his own cosmic arcade. To bring his newest single "La Funka" to (far-out) life, the singer enlisted life-size teddy-bear backup dancers and a panoramic view of the moon. It could be read as the scope of the artist's ambitions.

As he told MTV News ahead of the show, he's shooting for the stars when it comes to his upcoming collaborations. "DJ Snake, Megan Thee Stallion, Blackpink and Ozuna, coming up next," Ozuna told correspondent Dometi Pongo on the red carpet. "That's here! A [news] premiere here!"

Ozuna.jpg

Ozuna's music videos and streaming tracks regularly rack up millions and millions of plays, so a collab single with Megan Thee Stallion, Blackpink, and DJ Snake truly has the potential to break some records. And from his planetary performance last night (September 12), it seems quite possible that's precisely what he's going for.

You wouldn't necessarily know the artist's sheer global magnitude from his chipper demeanor. He was all smiles as he spoke to MTV News about getting the call to premiere "La Funka" at this year's show and grinned wide when he recalled his 2018's smash breakthrough with Selena Gomez, Cardi B, and DJ Snake, "Taki Taki." "It's a good time to do the best premiere [and] the best performance," he said.

download (14).jpg

"La Funka" is a relentlessly upbeat reggaeton-pop jam, showcasing Ozuna's golden vocals as he's made a career out of flexing on tracks with Daddy Yankee, Karol G, and Rosalía, with whom he performed a close-encounter version of "Yo x Ti, Tu x Mi" at the 2019 VMAs. If his past work is any indication, the collab single with DJ Snake, Meg, and Blackpink is set to be a certified banger.

Ozuna's latest album was 2021's Los Dioses, which he made with Anuel AA. Since 2017, he's released a new album every year. The countdown is on until his next single — until then, relive the space fun of his "La Funka" VMAs performance below.

Satgame (aka SAT GAME) is a hip-hop artist out of Detroit with more music to his name than most of his indie peers. He came into this world at 8:03 am on the 26th day of November in 1989 and since then has been doing whatever it takes to make his mark. He was featured alongside some of the most talented acts heating up the hip hop scene on Bongo Boy Records’ Volume XVI, and on Bentley Records with his release, My Bentley So Cold.

Many fans caught wind of Satgame back in 2014 when he dropped, Heart of a Warrior, Vol. 1 (under Sat Game). Since then he’s released a cascade of music from “My Shit So Cold” to “Niggas Made Cause Dey Pockets Little.” Within each of his tracks, listeners can find everything from lyrical finesse to raw hip-hop ideals. Those are the qualities found in his previous releases and on My Bentley So Cold.

Satgame’s music is available around the world, including Australia and Mexico. Those interested in adding new hip hop to their playlists, reviewing his music, or interviewing Satgame can reach out and follow his movement on Spotify, YouTube, Amazon Music, & Apple Music.
